The Silent Brick system protects backup data through physical network isolation: once a backup job is complete, the Silent Brick Max Air disconnects from the network at the hardware level, meaning that the stored data can no longer be accessed by any connected system. The Silent Brick Pro can even be physically ejected and moved to a secure location. Ransomware spreading across the network cannot find a path to access the isolated Silent Bricks — neither via network protocols nor via administrator accounts. Furthermore, immutability prevents backup versions that have already been written from being subsequently altered or deleted. Even if the production environment and primary backup are completely compromised, a verifiably intact recovery point remains intact. ### Ransomware Ransomware is malware that encrypts data on infected systems and demands a ransom for decryption — with the goal of forcing organizations and public bodies to pay by paralyzing their operations. Cloud backups can be accessed via network connections — usually via API endpoints, which are often secured with the same login credentials as the rest of the IT infrastructure. If admin credentials are compromised by an attack, an attacker can, in many scenarios, also delete or encrypt cloud backups. A physical air gap, by contrast, means that after the write operation, there is no longer any network connection to the storage medium — neither logical nor physical. #### Which backup software is compatible with Silent Brick? The Silent Brick System is designed to serve as a backup destination for all common enterprise backup solutions that support standard protocols such as FC, iSCSI, NFS, SMB or S3. Compatibility with Veeam Backup & Replication, Commvault, Acronis Cyber Protect, SEP Sesam and NovaStor NovaBackup has been explicitly tested and documented. There is no need to migrate existing backup software: the Silent Brick System is integrated into the existing solution as a new backup destination. #### How quickly can data be recovered following an attack? The restore speed depends on the chosen protocol, the network infrastructure and the volume of data to be restored — not on any additional decryption or unlocking procedure. As air-gapped targets function like regular backup targets once reconnected, the existing backup software transfers the restore job directly.
