# Silent Brick OS. Software, defining storage.
The software powers the storage. To give you the freedom to decide how to use the Silent Brick system, we are constantly developing the Silent Brick OS. As a result, your system supports the SMB, NFS and S3 protocols, can function as a SecureNAS or VTL, and offers a wide range of configuration and monitoring features.

Silent Brick OS brings the entire system into a single browser tab. Configure volumes, create shares, check snapshots, install updates: all without installing a client or undergoing a week of training. Every function is documented in the UI, and every action is traceable.

## Status indicator in the UI. A warning in your inbox.
The Silent Brick OS monitors every fan, every HDD and every NVMe module. Alerts and errors are sent by email to your administrator and, if required, to FAST LTA at the same time. If you use a centralised monitoring system, you can integrate it via IPMI or SNMP. Problems are identified before they lead to system failures.
## SMB, NFS, S3, VTL. Any hardware, any connection, any application.
Servers and backup software connect via SMB or NFS. S3 is used for object storage-enabled solutions such as Veeam, Commvault and Rubrik. VTL via iSCSI is used to replace large tape archives. The choice of protocol is a matter of configuration, not hardware procurement.

## Break the routine. API reigns.
A comprehensive API automates everything that can be done manually via the UI. A real-world example: once the backup job is complete, a script automatically ejects the Silent Brick Pro from Controller X. A true physical air gap, without anyone having to go into the data centre. Scripts schedule snapshots, replication and user customisations. Anything that is a recurring task runs automatically.

Up to 90 days retroactively. Can be mounted in read-only mode. Independent from your backup software.
### Replication
Volume-based. To a second location. Even to systems with different hardware configurations.
### SecureNAS
SNAS with dual or triple parity. SNAS ERC with erasure coding and fourfold redundancy.
### Updates
Software updates without data migration or hardware replacement, free of charge within CARE.
### Air Gap
Ejecting and reactivating the Silent Brick Pro and Silent Brick Max Air via the UI or API.
## Hardware protects the data. Software makes them usable.
Storage stands or falls on the quality of its software. The Silent Brick OS is designed for long-term operation: it is backwards compatible with the previous generation and forwards compatible with new modules, with free updates available throughout the CARE period of up to 10 years.

## Questions and answers
#### Which backup software can be integrated with the Silent Brick system?
Any backup software that supports SMB, NFS, S3 or VTL via iSCSI. This includes Veeam, Commvault, Veritas NetBackup, SEP sesam, Acronis and others.
#### How is the Silent Brick OS updated?
Software updates are carried out directly via the user interface. They are free of charge during the CARE subscription period and include new features and security updates.
#### Can the Silent Brick OS be integrated into existing monitoring solutions?
Yes. The system can be integrated with popular monitoring solutions such as Checkmk, Zabbix, PRTG or Nagios via IPMI and SNMP interfaces.
#### Can different applications run simultaneously on the same system?
Yes. Each Silent Brick is assigned to a specific application. SecureNAS, Object Storage and VTL run in parallel on the same Controller X.
#### Is there an API?
Yes. The Silent Brick OS features a comprehensive REST API that allows all UI actions to be automated.
