Die patentierte VFS-Technologie, auf der windream basiert, stellt das ECM-System als Netzwerk-Laufwerk im Windows Explorer dar. VFS steht für Virtual File System (virtuelles Dateisystem). Das virtuelle Dateisystem ermöglicht die Erfassung von Dokumenten im ECM-System über den „Speichern“-Befehl der Anwendungen und über die Funktionen des Windows Explorers. windream unterstützt die Dateiformate aller Programme. Alle üblichen Befehle für Datei-Operationen bleiben in windream vollständig erhalten. So lassen sich Dokumente wie gewohnt sowohl per Drag-and-Drop als auch über die entsprechenden Menübefehle des Explorers verschieben, kopieren oder löschen.
